If you do not know what you want for yourself, accept what others think you deserve.

"I am way below the market in terms of pay and the responsibilities." Aahaana sounded upset when she shared this during the coaching conversation

Me: What do you think is causing this?

Aahaana: I think the management is not interested in growing people.

Me: Aah! It looks like there has been a promotion freeze all around for the past few years.

Aahaana: No, not like that; people are moving up here. I think it is my education that is impacting my growth.

Me: It sounds like all the people who have been moving up are only from the top B school?

Aahaana: I haven't checked data, but perhaps that is how it is. I also think that they are growing people whom they like, there is a preference for a certain kind of people.

Me: And what kind is that?

Aahaana did not have any answers.

Me: You would have spoken to your managers during the performance conversation about your growth. What did they say?

Aahaana: Do not even talk about that. I have been waiting for them to discuss my growth conversations, but it has not happened.

Me: For the past five years, you have been waiting for them to have the conversation about your growth??

Aahaana: Yes, are they not supposed to do that?

Me: If I ask you, what role would you want to move to for your growth?

Aahaana: Anything which is better than the current role.

Me: So you do not know what you want?

Aahaana: I expect my managers to show me the path.

Me: They will show you the path, but only if you have the destination set for yourself.
